On ten-cent beer night, when an estimated 60,000 cups of brew were sold to a crowd of 25,134, the Cleveland Indians had to forfeit the game due to the unruly behavior of their fans on June 4, 1974.
Quote of the Week
Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach John McKay, as quick-witted as they come, had to coach one of the worst teams in football (0–14 in 1976). When McKay was asked about what he thought about his team's execution, the master of quips struck:
Letters to the Editor

Enjoyed Last Night
This will be a short Letter as Sports Today publishes early Monday morning. But also because, thanks to Draymond Green, this game was over in the first 10 seconds after the jump ball. Draymond ferociously wrestled Horford and the ball to the floor, after Horford had snagged the tip-off. I thought Frank Gore had put on a Warriors uniform with that take-down.

Plaudits to the entire team for their toughness.

Hello, Editor!
Great last issue. Especially like the Cal rowing team article, the Dave Newhouse perspective (Steve Kerr for senator!), and the letter from Pete Elman.

Keep up the good work!

In The Words Of George H.W. Bush, "Na Gonna Do It."
(At 1:12 -- but play the whole piece.)

However, pro golfer Kevin Na "IS" gonna do it.

The golfer who has driven other pros crazy with his turtle-like pace of play, has announced he will resign from the PGA Tour in favor of the Greg Norman-Saudi Arabia-backed LIV golf league. 'Anyone who commits to LIV Golf puts their PGA Tour status in jeopardy,' per PGA Tour statements.

The 38-year-old Na will join Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, and other non-luminaries and has-beens in the Greg Norman/Saudi tournament in London, which will compete with next week's Canadian Open, whose lead sponsor, The Royal Bank of Canada, has cut ties with Johnson.

The company issued this statement: “As a result of the decisions made by professional golfers Dustin Johnson and Graeme McDowell to play the LIV Golf Invitational Series opener, RBC is terminating its sponsorship agreement with both players. We wish them well in their future endeavors.” Johnson had already committed to the RBC Canadian Open and has been featured on a number of the event’s publicity literature.

The upstart golf league has received much criticism due to its billions in Saudi investment funds. Saudi Arabia has a lengthy history of human rights abuses and violations, but that has not stopped nearly 50 golfers from competing in London next week.

Why We Despise The Boston Celtics
And THIS, ladies and gents, is one of many reasons we DESPISE the Boston Celtics. Dust off the cobwebs.

Marcus Smart injures Steph Curry

Said coach Steve Kerr on why he shouted at Marcus Smart for the play: “I thought it was a dangerous play. I thought Marcus dove into Steph’s knee and that’s what I was upset about. I have a lot of respect for Marcus. He’s a hell of a player, gamer, competitor. I coached him in the World Cup a few summers ago. We talked after the game and we’re good, but I thought it was a dangerous play. I just let him know”

These are the Boston Celtics, the Dallas Cowboys of the NBA. Evil incarnate. They MUST, and WILL be vanquished by the Warriors for the good of humanity.

Frank Gore Announces Retirement,
To Be Inducted Into 49ers HOF

The San Francisco 49ers announced on last Thursday that RB Frank Gore, a five-time Pro Bowl selection (2007, 2010 & 2012-14) and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's All-Decade Team of the 2010s, has signed a one-day contract with the team and will retire from the National Football League. In addition, Gore will be the newest inductee into the Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame, becoming the 31st member of the prestigious Hall of Fame for one of the most storied franchises in all of sports.

"We are thrilled to induct Frank Gore into the Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. San Francisco 49ers Hall of Fame, his rightful place among our all-time greats," said 49ers CEO Jed York. "Frank had to overcome many challenges upon entering the NFL and now leaves the game not only as one of the best backs in NFL history, but one of the best football players ever. Frank's 16-year NFL career is a testament to his durability, having played in more games than any other running back in league history. His grit, toughness and commitment to greatness earned him the respect of his coaches, teammates and opponents. We knew this day would come when Frank would retire a 49er, and we look forward to The Faithful celebrating his induction into the 49ers Hall of Fame in Levi's Stadium this upcoming season."

The Larry O'Brien NBA Championship Trophy is awarded annually to the winner of the NBA Finals

by Robert Moselle

No, it's not your imagination. Sports Today has regularly featured Richard Nixon's various connections to sports, such as throwing out the first pitch at Candlestick Park. There's no hashtag like a #Nixon. Now, it's the NBA's turn to join the #Nixon conversation.

We all know about Watergate, right? Those halcyon days of the early 70s when simple break-ins or wiretaps made headlines? And just whose office did the Watergate burglars intend to infiltrate for nefarious purposes?

If you guessed Lawrence "Larry" O'Brien, you are correct! O'Brien had been elected Chairman of the Democratic National Convention in 1970, and had received a plush office in a Washington hotel called, (drum roll please), The Watergate!

The investigation of the Watergate break in eventually unraveled Nixon's presidency and forced him to become the only president in American history to resign the office. Although O'Brien has been included in the many conspiracy 'theories' about Watergate throughout the years, that historic escapade featured an unmatched cavalcade of political characters and shadowy figures who were caught up in the complex web which surrounded RN.

(Remember, Sports Today readers, in fairness, Nixon signed Title IX!)

Post-Watergate, O'Brien took the job vacated by Walter Kennedy as Commissioner of the NBA, a position he held from 1975 until 1984. During his tenure, the league saw many changes, most notably the merger with the American Basketball Association and the first major
TV contract.

What is the unspoken mystery of the Lawrence O'Brien Championship Trophy? Was its name intended as a "dig" by the media and others to "rub it in" to Nixon? A little Watergate payback? Or simply a tribute to a gentleman who contributed mightily to the greatness of the NBA? (Or a little of both?)

Gary Payton II receives NBA's Bob Lanier Community Assist Award, Presented by Kaiser Permamente

Kaiser Permanente And NBA To Donate $75,000 To GPII Foundation In Celebration Of The League’s 75th Anniversary Season

SAN FRANCISCO – Golden State Warriors guard Gary Payton II has received the NBA’s 2021-22 Bob Lanier Community Assist Award, formerly known as the Seasonlong NBA Cares Community Assist Award, presented by Kaiser Permanente. Paying homage to the league’s 75th anniversary year, the GPII Foundation will receive a $75,000 donation from the NBA and Kaiser Permanente as part of the announcement. The award, which recognizes Payton’s sustained community outreach in support of Bay Area youth over the course of the season, was determined by fan vote on social media and an NBA executive panel.

Payton, who was awarded the January 2022 monthly NBA Cares Community Assist Award, was selected among the league’s 633 players who played in at least one game during the 2021-22 NBA regular season for his outstanding commitment to serving his community. He joins Stephen Curry (2013-14) and Kevin Durant (2017-18) as the only Warriors to receive the season-long award, making Golden State the only team who has had three players receive the award since its inception in 2014.

For video highlights of Payton’s work in the community during the 2021-22 season, Click Here. For more information on Payton’s nomination, Click Here.

In March, Payton was invited by San Francisco Supervisor Ahsha Safai to take part in a rally at San Francisco City Hall in support of universal screening for risk of dyslexia alongside state and local politicians and numerous community members. During the rally, Payton told the story of his personal journey with dyslexia and spoke to the importance of early detection in children.

Earlier this season, Payton launched the GPII Foundation, a nonprofit aimed to act as a conduit for Dyslexia-awareness and to support early screening, detection, and certified assessment for youth and young adults with languages-based learning challenges. The foundation will provide funding for educators to get certified in early intervention services and support for students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia.

Cal Bears
Cal Men’s Rowing Wins National Championship
Bears Varsity Eight Caps Undefeated Season With 18th IRA Title

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The varsity eight entered Sunday's Grand Final with an undefeated record this spring, and with 1,000 meters to go at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championship, the Cal men's rowing team's hard work was showing signs of a hard-fought victory.

With the win, the Bears secured the program's 18th national championship and 100th national title overall for Cal Athletics.

The Varsity Challenge Cup was not the only hardware Cal took home. The Bears' second varsity eight won silver in the Kennedy Cup in a thrilling comeback. The third varsity eight finished fifth.

"Really proud of how the guys raced today," said head coach Scott Frandsen. "A full team effort leading to the varsity being able to really have their best race of the year and represent the team and win. They executed their race perfectly, really happy for those nine guys and the full 60 guys on the team. This has been the goal all year and the guys did it."

Like it did all season, the V8+ got off to a fast start. The top four boats of Cal, Yale, Washington, and Brown separated themselves from the remainder of the field in the first 100 meters. By the 500-meter mark, the Bears had a two-seat advantage on the Bulldogs. By the 1,000-meter mark, the Bears and Bulldogs pulled away from the rest of the field, with Cal extending its lead over Yale.

The Bears' championship boat, led by Pac-12 Male Athlete of the Year Ollie Maclean, Newcomer of the Year Gennaro di Mauro as well as all-conference honorees Elliott KempAngus Dawson, and Campbell Crouch, defeated a Yale boat that featured three Olympians by over two seconds, finishing with a time of 5:44.239.

Cal took home the Varsity Challenge Cup for the first time since 2016. The Bears also won national championships in 1928, '32, '34, '35, '39, '49, '60, '61, '64, '76, '99, '00, '01, '02, '06, and '10. It is also believed to be the first undefeated season for the V8+ since 2001 when Frandsen was in the boat for the Bears.

In the battle for the Stewards Cup, Yale, Harvard, and Washington took the early lead. The Bears began their move over the final 1,000 meters to try to chase down Dartmouth and Washington for a place on the podium but ran out of race track to take fifth with a time of 6:11.513.

In the final for the Kennedy Cup, the 2V8+ was tremendous. The Bears opened the race in the lead pack but sat in fifth behind leaders Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, and Washington. At the 1,000-meter mark, Cal began its charge, moving into third and closing fast. Over the final 100 meters, the Bears took control of second and held off Dartmouth, capturing silver by over three seconds with a time of 5:54.052.

Stanford Cardinal
Repeat Cutino Winner

SAN FRANCISCO – Makenzie Fischer added yet another honor to her impressive final campaign, being named the 2022 Peter J. Cutino Award recipient on Saturday night at The Olympic Club of San Francisco.

Presented to the most outstanding female collegiate water polo player in the nation as voted by Division I coaches, Fischer is a three-time finalist and the third two-time honoree in school history, also winning the award in 2019 to join Kiley Neushul (2012, 2015) and Annika Dries (2011, 2014).

Six Cardinal players have combined to win the award nine times, with Melissa Seidemann (2013), Jackie Frank (2003) and Brenda Villa (2002) also receiving the award.

Returning to the pool for the first time since 2019 due to both Olympic training/competition and pandemic-shortened seasons, Fischer was named the ACWPC Player of the Year for the second time in her career earlier this week. A four-time ACWPC All-American, Fischer qualified for the first team three times (2022, 2019, 2018) and the second team in 2017.

Fischer was named the NCAA Most Valuable Player after guiding Stanford to its eighth national title in school history and first since 2019 with a 10-7 win over USC back on May 8. An All-MPSF first-team selection for the third straight season and fourth overall, Fischer led the Cardinal in goals (83), assists (47), points (130) and shots (167) while producing 23 multi-goal games.

A two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time NCAA team champion, Fischer became the Cardinal's all-time leading scorer in a win over USC on Feb. 26, surpassing the 239 mark achieved by Seidemann and Lauren Silver. Fischer closed out her career on The Farm with 288 career goals, which also ranks third all-time in MPSF history.

A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2018 and 2019, Fischer is once again on track for a third award after being named an all-district selection two weeks ago. Equally impressive in the classroom, Fischer was the Cardinal's NCAA Elite 90 Award nominee in 2022, boasting a 3.96 undergraduate GPA within the NCAA's 4.0 scale of calculations. A three-time MPSF All-Academic Team honoree, Fischer is also carrying a 4.0 graduate GPA in mechanical engineering.

For her capstone project, Fischer helped design a hexagonal roof for modular refugee housing. Working with an organization that sought to create more dignified living conditions for Syrian refugees in Jordan, Fischer's group was tasked with creating a roof that could be interconnected to accommodate additional family members and easily shipped and assembled.

Established in 1999 by The Olympic Club, the Peter J. Cutino Award is given annually to the top men's and women's NCAA Division I water polo players as voted on by coaches from across the country. The namesake of the award is a legend in United States water polo history, with eight NCAA titles as head coach at Cal. The Olympic Club has a long and distinguished competitive water polo history, a tradition that continues today in the pool with some of the best age-group teams in the world.

Any chance of a sweep by the Warriors in this
NBA Championship series ended with the Celts breaking the Warriors 9-game playoff
winning streak at the Chase Center.

With the Warriors loss, the Celts are now favored to win the series. I cannot imagine a sweep.

The 9-game streak brought winning streaks to mind. Two questions!

(1) Which NBA team holds the record for most consecutive wins during the regular season?

(2) Which NBA team holds the record for most consecutive wins during the playoffs?

Oakland Close Out a Seven Point Week with a Revenge Win on the Road in Monterey

Oakland Roots were on the front foot early as Edgardo Rito finished a chance in the 21st minute off the feed from Mikael Tørset Johnsen to give Oakland the lead. Roots continued to attack with the next best chance coming late in the first half when a feed from Rito just missed Johnsen. The half would end with Oakland ahead 1-0.

The second half was a balanced affair with chances coming from both sides. Benny Diaz held firm with saves at the back as the best Monterey chance went just wide of the post in the 84th minute. Oakland Roots killed the game with a goal in stoppage time from Darek Formella off the pass from Óttar Magnús Karlsson. The game ended with Oakland taking away the 2-0 victory.

Oakland now returns home to host the Rio Grande Valley Toros at Laney on Saturday, June 11th.

Talking to Head Coach Juan Guerra -- What was your message before the match?
Juan Guerra: That the week finishes today at 9:30 and the boys got the job done 27 minutes early. We finished the week strong. We finished with three points on the road. I'm happy. When you see this (pointing to the fans) you are telling me that it's almost 400 traveling of our own coming here to support and to push, to suffer and now to enjoy it together. It makes me understand a bit more the responsibility that we have. Because when you put on this crest and you put on this jersey, when you represent this organization that has so many people who love it, there is a big responsibility for us. The guys took care of the job and I'm gonna go in and congratulate them, as you know it wasn't an easy week for us. Now we need to keep pushing forward and there is a lot left to go.

Keeping the zero has been something you have been repeating each week. Talk about the defense.
Juan Guerra: The importance of keeping the zero in this game, while playing away was key. They knew it, I said it to them, but they even wrote it on the locker room and they took the responsibility that we were gonna keep the zero, because we are a team that creates chances. We played well offensively and defensively, that is why I am happy. We came on the road able to impose our identity here in front of our people in an away match. It feels very good.

“The MotoAmerica team really flexes its muscle behind their Monterey visit,” explains John Narigi, president and general manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “It’s entertaining for the entire family with its racing, paddock show and activities such as the Wall of Death, Ball of Steel, Freestyle Ramp, Stunt Show, and Bike Show. “The inaugural King Of The Baggers race in 2020 was such a crowd favorite, it is now a mainstay of their Monterey visit,” Narigi adds. “And it’s impressive to see loyalists of BMW, Ducati, Harley Davidson, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and more come together to share their passion for bikes and racing.”

Daily tickets starting at just $15, limited VIP packages and trackside camping are available online at MotoAmerica.com.

WWE Superstars The Bella Twins Named Grand Marshals of Toyota/Save Mart 350 at
Sonoma Raceway

SONOMA, Calif. – Nikki and Brie Bella have become two of the most iconic female Superstars in WWE history. On Sunday, June 12 at Sonoma Raceway, they will produce a new form of rumbling when they give the command to start engines for the 33rd annual Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Cup Series race.

Inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2020, the twins will serve as grand marshals for the event. They join luminaries such as former 49ers great Jerry Rice, famed chef Guy Fieri and current 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan who have served in that role.

“We’re ecstatic to have the Bella Twins join the incredible list of celebrities who have served as grand marshals for this event,” said Sonoma Raceway Executive Vice President and General Manager Jill Gregory. “They are some of the most versatile women to have participated in professional sports. They have had hall of fame careers in the ring, but have been equally as successful with their business ventures outside of the ring. We’re honored to have them be a key part of this event.”

The Bella Twins have shown they are a force to be reckoned with in anything they do. The sisters have shown they were more than WWE Diva Champions. They have become some of the best entrepreneurs, Philanthropists, Executive Producers, and New York Times best-selling authors in their sport. The power duo continues to introduce a new generation of fans to WWE through their hit reality shows, "Total Divas" and "Total Bellas," The Bellas Podcast on SiriusXM’s Stitcher, and are investors and creative directors of Colugo.

The Bella Twins also have their own wine label, Bonita Bonita wine. The twins have stayed local to Northern California and grown and crafted their wine in Napa Valley. With Californian roots, we are more than thrilled to help add the title of NASCAR grand marshals to their already astounding resume.

Sonoma Raceway’s annual NASCAR weekend begins with a doubleheader of the General Tire 200 ARCA Menards Series West race and the DoorDash 250 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race on Saturday, June 11. The weekend concludes with the Toyota/Save Mart 350 on Sunday, June 12.

For tickets or more information on the Toyota/Save Mart 350, visit www.sonomaraceway.com/events/toyota-save-mart-350/tickets/ or call 800-870-RACE. Weekend and single-day tickets are available; race-day tickets for kids 12 and under are just $10 and free on Friday and Saturday with the advance purchase of an adult ticket.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.

Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
